Pregnancy Care & Webster Technique
Musculoskeletal pain is very common in pregnancy, especially low back pain, with 50-80% of women reporting back pain during pregnancy and 50-75% during labour. However, many expectant moms are confused about what to do about their pain. They don’t want to take medication and are unsure if it’s safe to see a Chiropractor while pregnant. As a result, most moms do nothing and just live with the pain. But, they don’t have to because Chiropractic care, including the adjustment (spinal manipulation), is a highly safe and effective evidence-based treatment for mommy’s-to-be.
A technique that is commonly used to treat Chiropractic patients during pregnancy is the Webster Technique. According to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), the Webster Technique is a specific Chiropractic analysis and adjustment that is safe to use during pregnancy. The goal of the adjustment and treatment is to reduce the effects of sacral and sacroiliac joint dysfunction in order to improve the biomechanical function of the sacrum and pelvis. This correction of sacral function may have numerous positive effects such as decreased pain, increased function and optimal baby positioning, to name a few.
In addition to manual treatment, Chiropractors can:
- Prescribe a pregnancy-focused rehabilitation program including core and pelvic floor exercises.
- Advise you on postural pillows to help maintain proper posture and decrease pain while getting a good night sleep.
- Advise you on comfortable footwear to provide a stable foundation.
- Advise you on the use of stabilization belts and Kinesiotaping to provide stability and help decrease laxity in the pelvis.
