Dear Dr. Mary, should I be eating organic foods?
March is Nutrition Month!
Many of my patients have concerns regarding organic foods – how do we know if these are indeed healthier? Is this just a marketing gimmick? Is it worth it to spend the extra money on organic options?
Research does indeed show that non organic dairy and meat products contain hormone disrupting products and other products that are deleterious to our health. So, I do always recommend spending the extra money to purchase organic varieties of such products. Keep in mind that dairy products and meat products should only compose a small percentage of your overall nutritional intake, so purchasing top quality products in lesser quantity will mean that your grocery bill will not increase.
Fruits and vegetables are different. There is good research to show that with some fruits and vegetables, by properly washing and preparing them, we can remove most if not all pesticide residue. Others will hold onto the pesticide and by eating these foods we are ingesting these residues. The Environmental Working Group has done the research for us, so this is the basis of this month’s newsletter – Nutrition Month March 2015 Toronto.
This month I am available in Toronto:
Monday & Friday from 9:30am – 7pm
I am happy to set up individual meetings outside of this time frame if necessary!
If you would like guidance on individual nutritional recommendations feel free to contact me and I will happily set up a time for us to meet. Also, if you know of anyone who could benefit from this information I am happy for you to pass it along!
Have a fabulous afternoon,
Dr. Mary
